An increasing number of pubs and restaurants are facing the threat of having their licenses revoked for excessive noise, according to reports.
Both the Jabal Lebanon restaurant in St Albans and the Queen Elizabeth pub in Reading had their licenses revoked this week after nearby residents complained about the levels of noise.
Environmental officers from Reading Borough Council received over 25 complaints from residents about the noise coming from the Queen Elizabeth pub.
Despite the landlord, Gathu Ndirangu, insisting that he had done all he could to reduce volume levels by removing the jukebox and installing double-glazing, his license was withdrawn.
As the summer approaches, establishments with outdoor areas are even more at risk.
A group of 12 residents complained about the al fresco dining area of the Jabal Lebanon restaurant.
Speaking on behalf of the group Nicholas Howells told the Herts Advertiser: "In the past, when there has been outside dining, it has been impossible to live a tolerable existence."
The group said that the restaurant owner's intentions seemed good, but nevertheless St Albans magistrates agreed an outright ban yesterday.
