Leading organisations within the drinks industry have posed a number of questions for the new Alcohol Health Alliance.
The move is motivated by the alliance's calls for higher rates of tax on alcohol and concerns over the way such products are advertised.
The alliance is lobbying for a ten per cent increase in alcohol tax, new warning labels and restrictions on advertising.
Rob Hayward, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said that the industry was aiming to challenge some of the alliance's "basic assumptions".
"We do not believe the evidence base supports their call for higher taxes, more regulation and health warnings," he commented.
The measures advocated by the lobby group could mean that the situation becomes "worse", he added.
Among the organisations and groups forming the alliance are the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Royal college of Nursing and Alcohol Concern.
