Pub chain to sell pints for a penny

A chain of pubs has decided to sell pints of beer to its customers for just 1p when they buy a spirit.

The Dukedom Group - which is running the promotion at six of its pubs - says it is trying to help credit-crunched drinkers to afford an evening out.

Russell Vickers, operations manager at the Stockton-on-Tees-based chain, asserts that the difficult economic situation is making people think twice about socialising.

"We hope that the offer will encourage our customers to feel they can still enjoy the conviviality and comfort of their local pub without running up a big bar bill," he states.

The promotion is the latest in a series of measures by pub insurance customers aiming to bring drinkers into their establishments, such as Wetherspoons' recent decision to sell pints of beer for 99p.

Neil Williams, head of communications at the Beer and Pub Association, said this week that pub insurance customers are being innovative in order to stay afloat during the recession.
