Small firms who decide to outsource their PR operations will find that doing so "can be both flexible and cost effective", one expert has claimed.
Richard Ellis, a spokesperson for the Public Relations Consultant Association (PRCA), explained that by outsourcing PR, companies can obtain access to expertise and contacts that they would not normally have access to.
However, he added that anyone planning on hiring a PR consultant still needed to plan ahead.
Mr Ellis said: "Before you retain a consultant make sure that you write a really clear brief with a budget.
"Once you have chosen your consultancy, you will need to work closely with them to make sure they understand your business objectives and are always in touch with what you are doing."
The PRCA is a professional body representing PR consultancies. It was founded in 1969 and now has over 125 member firms, which employ around 5,000 people.
