Gordon Brown's claims that the government has allowed small firms to increase employment are "incredible", according to one body.
In news which might be of interest to business insurance customers, Phil Orford, chief executive of the Forum of Private Business, has cast doubt on claims that there has been an increase in the number of small firms in the UK.
He said: "While the number of small businesses has indeed grown from 3.7 to 4.7 million since 1997, during the same period the number of businesses actually employing people has remained at 1.2 million."
According to Mr Orford, the increase is more likely to be down to the government encouraging firms to officially register as businesses, rather than an actual rise in the number of companies operating.
Recently, Bytestart.co.uk reported comments by Sikin Andela, partner at law firm Glovers, who warned small firms to make sure they have business insurance in place if they have staff members who work from home.
