An initiative is urging pub insurance owners in Dundee to switch from glass to plastic vessels in order to improve the level of protection provided to their customers.
The Community Safety Partnership is advocating the switch with funding from the Scottish government, recommending licensees begin using polycarbonate containers rather than traditional glassware.
It has a stock of 9,000 plastic containers, stamped with the community safety logo and claims that there has been a strong response to the scheme from pub insurance holders.
Polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable and can reduce the risk of injury arising from drink-related incidents, the group asserts.
Chief superintendent Colin McCashey states that while incidents of violence in Dundee are rare, they still take place.
He comments: "The availability of polycarbonate glass is an excellent way in which to further enhance safety and I would encourage license holders to take up this opportunity."
In other news, O'Sheas Tavern in Bangor has been shut down for six weeks due to infringements including the sale of alcohol to under-18s, which could interest pub insurance holders.
