Plastic glasses could reduce insurance claims

Pubs and clubs could potentially save money on insurance by introducing polycarbonate glasses, according to one company head.

The Morning Advertiser reports that the UK's biggest nightclub company, Luminar, expects to save £200,000 per year in claims when it rolls out the use of the glasses in all of its estates.

Steve Thomas, chief executive of Luminar, said that he expected polycarbonate glasses to put an end to minor claims by customers who take off their shoes in clubs and tread on broken glass.

He told the newspaper that the introduction of polycarbonates would be cost-neutral as although they cost more they last longer.

"If a premises has a potential for problems, why wouldn't it introduce polycarbonates?" he asked.

A hairdresser who was forced to quit her job following a glassing attack in a Southampton nightclub yesterday called for pubs and clubs to introduce plastic bottles and glasses, stating that had this been done, her facial injuries could have been avoided.
