Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can do most of their financial business online, reducing the need for paper, according to a new study.

Industry website bytestart.co.uk, claims that businesses looking to cut costs and become more environmentally friendly have reduced the amount of waste they create by offering paperless services.

The site adds that advances such as PayPal and Google Checkout have allowed small businesses to have an online presence and offer their customers a low cost-service.

"Virtually any business can accept cards these days without always needing an expensive machine or online payments provider," the website states.

Earlier this week Adam Wayland, editor of Smallbusiness.co.uk, said that all SMEs should have some form of online presence as this helps consumers find products and services.

"There are special networking types of sites, one that springs to mind is BT Tradespace, where if you go inside you can have a very basic and important web presence," he said.
