An original and fresh approach is the most important thing for small and medium-sized businesses, according to one expert.
A spokeswoman for the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAWE) states that finding a gap in the market can be vitally important and that this is especially true for women.
Tanya Hine, president of the BAWE, advises women should ensure that the customer base is in place before proceeding with a business idea.
She adds that grants available especially for female entrepreneurs should be available for men as well - and that those that are available are not suitable for most people with new business ideas.
"The grants that are on the whole available are for lifestyle businesses to take women off the unemployment list; they are not there for true businesses," she said.
A study from the Economic and Social Research Council, found that 73 per cent of the 3.8 million self-employed people in autumn last year were men.
