Online security does not have to be a major expense for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), according to one expert.

A spokesman for Get Safe Online, an initiative aiming to help SMEs protect themselves online risks, said that internet fraud and virus protection can often be done quite cheaply.

Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online said: "If you are talking about a small business there really does not have to be too much spent."

He said although there was no denying that online spending and therefore online fraud was increasing, simple steps were often all that was needed to guard against this.

"All people need to make sure that their anti-virus and anti-spyware software is completely up to date and automated, so it automatically updates."

He concluded that it was also important for SMEs to back everything up in case hardware gets stolen.

Earlier this year, a survey by Get Safe Online found that 44 per cent of SMEs said they had fallen victim to internet crimes.
