Online presence 'enough to make a difference'

All small and medium-sized businesses should have some form of presence online as that is how modern customers find services and products, claims one expert.

Adam Wayland, editor of Smallbusiness.co.uk said today that with a little technical knowledge companies can set up a basic website that could significantly improve their sales.

He added that although for many companies who did not want to employ someone to set up and maintain a website there were other options available.

"There are special networking types of sites, one that springs to mind is BT Tradespace, where if you go inside you can have a very basic and important web presence," he said.

"Whether the small business owners will cotton on to the benefits of [the internet] is another matter, so it's about getting the message out there and making it as easy as possible," he concluded.

A recent study conducted by UK Online found that two thirds of small enterprises were conducting business without an internet connection and of those that do, 51 per cent said they did not have a company website.
