SMEs may be putting themselves at risk of e-crime if their computers are accessible to outsiders, industry experts have warned.
Some 44 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses have been a victim of cyber crime, which can include internet scams, identity fraud, phishing and data theft, according to new research commissioned by Get Safe Online.
The research found that 66 per cent of respondent SMEs store vital documents on their PCs and 69 per cent store their customer details on their IT systems, yet just 32 per cent consider themselves up-to-date with IT security issues.
Speaking ahead of the e-Crime Wales Summit 2007 being held in March, Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Corcoran of North Wales Police and the e-Crime Wales Steering Group said: "Many businesses are still failing to realise the need for tight IT security.
"It is something that should be at the top of their agenda."
