Environmental issues are the hottest topic in the motor industry today, according to new research from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The motor industry is leading consumer choices because it understands that carbon dioxide emissions and climate change are big issues for the sector.
However consumers are still mainly concerned with price, specification and running costs rather than ethical or green purchasing, it said.
Almost three-quarters of respondents to the survey said that emissions and climate change are the "single most important issue for the sector".
Chief executive Christopher Macgowan said: "Partnership with government and other stakeholders will ensure that these challenges are addressed effectively and within the context of a bright future."
"Joined-up thinking" was vital for the future success of the industry, the report suggested.
According to a recent report in motorbar.co.uk, UK sales of hybrid or alternatively-fuelled vehicles increased by 82 per cent in the first nine months of this year.
