The UK needs more entrepreneurs if it is to compete on the global stage, according to the Institute of Directors (IoD).
Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live's Wake Up To Money, IoD director Miles Templeman said that while "the culture of entrepreneurship" in the UK is better now than in the past, it still needs to improve.
"We need to get even better. The world has got even tougher in the last ten years and therefore we've got to raise our game even more," Mr Templeman told the programme.
He also recognised the good work Gordon Brown did at encouraging such a culture while chancellor and is looking for a government guided by him to make further progress on this front.
Yesterday, the Forum of Private Businesses said that a survey carried out by the organisation had revealed 70 per cent of small businesses felt that Mr Brown had not run the economy in a way that was beneficial to them.
