A Scottish politician is forging plans to outlaw the sale of cheap alcohol, possibly by introducing a minimum price per drink limit.
The Glasgow Sunday mail says justice minister Kenny MacAskill has won support from the Office of Fair Trading to raise drink prices.
One option being explored involves a rule saying one unit of alcohol cannot be sold for less than 50p.
Quoted by the paper, Mr MacAskill said: "There is something perverse in Scotland, where you can get a bottle of cider, high strength, for less than a bottle of water."
His comments follow violent clashes seen after last week's Uefa Cup final between Rangers and Zenit Saint Petersberg.
Some fans of the Scottish team were involved in clashes with police after the game, with prime minister Gordon Brown later condemning the incidents.
Government figures show alcohol-related deaths are on the rise in the UK, with 13.4 deaths per 100,000 people connected to drink.
