Menus should specify how much of a service charge is passed on to waiting staff, according to one union.

In news which might be of interest to restaurant insurance customers, David Turnbull, regional induction organiser for Unite, stated that this would be a "small move in the right direction".

According to Mr Turnbull, transparent tipping rules means that customers will no longer be tricked into thinking that their cash is going to staff members when it is not.

"It will also mean staff have a clear idea of what their share is," he said.

However, it will not address the issue of tips being used to top up the minimum wage which requires government action, Mr Turnbull added.

Until this time, he urged owners to sign up to the union's Fair Tips Charter.

The government has already announced plans to amend the Minimum Wage Act to stop restaurateurs topping up pay with tips, although no date has been set.ADNFCR-873-ID-18870135-ADNFCR
