New research has shown that a large number of graduate employees believe they are over-qualified for the job they are in.

The study, conducted by Kent University, found that about three out of ten graduates said they felt as if their employment does not correlate with their education level and that 67 per cent of customer services staff said they were over-qualified.

Commenting on the findings, Professor Francis Green said the figures were not indicative of a surplus of graduates but that employers should consider whether they are making the best use of their staff.

"I would be more sympathetic to expanding apprenticeships - but that seems old-fashioned nowadays," he said.

"People need to be better informed about the variations in returns to degrees so they don't get disillusioned."

The survey questioned around 7,800 workers including call centre workers and clerical assistants as well as those working in the customer services industry.
