Retail insurance customers in London are outperforming other regions in the UK, according to figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and advisory services firm KPMG.

The Retail Sales Monitor showed a 5.4 per cent rise in London sales in April, when compared to the same month in 2008.

Figures also show retail insurance customers in the capital outperformed the UK's overall rate of a 4.6 per cent rise, with London's rise being attributed to the warm weather and favourable exchange rates for visitors.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said: "Overall, London's customers are proving more resilient to recession."

He added that since the start of the year the capital has outperformed all other areas of the UK, while other regions play "catch-up".

London's retail insurance customers also outperformed the rest of Britain in March, showing a 5.1 per cent rise on last year's figures, compared to a 1.2 per cent drop for the UK as a whole.ADNFCR-873-ID-19174769-ADNFCR
