Retail insurance holders in London saw a like-for-like sales fall during August, it has been revealed.

Figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) showed that sales dropped by 5.9 per cent when compared to the same month last year - when they increased by 8.6 per cent.

In addition, the group pointed out that London retail insurance holders experienced decreased footfall, as better weather than 2008 drove people to pursue outdoor activities rather than shopping.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, commented: "These results don't suggest the recovery is under way. This is the lowest London sales growth since August 2005."

However, he also pointed out that sales this year are being compared to a month which was favourable to retail insurance holders, as August 2008 was the third strongest of the year.

Recently, the BRC announced that UK retail insurance holders saw like-for-like sales values fall by 0.1 per cent in August, when compared to 2008.
