Retail insurance holders in London saw their sales increase last month, according to new figures.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) revealed that like-for-like sales in central London rose by 4.7 per cent in June, when compared to the same month last year.

In addition, the organisation explained that retail insurance customers experienced a boost in footfall levels, as people were spurred to visit the shops by the month's hot weather.

The group also claimed that weakness of sterling against the euro attracted overseas visitors to the capital, although their spending was quite restrained.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, commented: "Yes, London outperformed the rest of the UK. But, like the rest of the country, uncertainty about jobs means Londoners are still nervous about spending - particularly big-ticket items."

Helen Dickinson, head of retail at professional services firm KPMG, which co-authored the report, claimed that the capital is also experiencing better consumer confidence than the rest of the country.

Recent research from Barclaycard found that 62 per cent of UK retail insurance holders believe new and existing customers are visiting their stores less.
