Pub and club owners should be made to pay for alcohol-related antisocial behaviour policing, according to the Scottish justice secretary.

The Scotsman reports that Kenny MacAskill said people who are permitted to sell alcohol should bear the economic and social responsibilities that go with it.

"The effect of alcohol on our city and town centres is not cost-free and those who profit from it must contribute to addressing it," he said.

He added that it was unfair for taxpayers to foot the whole bill and that licensees should accept some of the cost incurred.

"These fees could be used to create a fund to help offset the costs of additional policing in areas with a large number of late-opening premises."

He singled out areas such as Lothian Road in Edinburgh and Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow stating that these which he claimed were "antisocial behaviour hotspots" particularly at weekends.

Earlier this month the Swansea Evening Post reported that pub owners in Wales were being told they risk losing their license if they are unable to control the bad language of outdoor smokers.
