John Hemming, Liberal Democrat MP for Birmingham Yardley, has questioned whether a campaign to catch pubs selling alcohol to drunks is a suitable use of police time.
The Morning Advertiser reports that Mr Hemming has submitted an early day motion calling on the government to scrap the plans, which are expected to include undercover police operations.
"It's [a] waste of police resources. No one has a problem with people going down the pub to have a few drinks," he told the publication.
According to the news provider, the campaign is expected to be undertaken by one in three police basic command units between December 1st and 23rd and could see staff receive £80 fines.
Meanwhile, prime minister Gordon Brown has indicated that the government would be publishing a paper to address certain aspects of the sale of alcohol in the UK's supermarkets, the Publican reports.
