Small firms in the UK that are looking to establish an online presence should make sure they keep their website address as short as possible, one expert has claimed.

John De Groot, the managing director of advice firm Startup Co, also stated that people should make sure that the website name is the same as that of the business.

He said: " If it is to promote a product, then consider a domain name that is the same as the product name. If it is to promote a generic range of products then a name that describes that product range."

Small business owners might want to uses keyword searches to identify what people search for using search engines such as Google, he added.

They could then use this information as the basis for their website name, he concluded.

According to verisign.co.uk there were 10.7 million domain names registered during the first quarter of 2007.
