The internet can be "a legal minefield" for owners of small firms, according to one industry body.

In news which might be of interest to retail insurance customers, Phil McCabe, a spokesperson for the Forum of Private Business, explains that there is a raft of legislation which companies have to deal with.

"For small business owners, the internet can be a legal minefield and many may not be fully aware of what they have to do to comply with the law," he said.

These include the Companies Act 2006, which came into force at the start of this month and means that a firm's name, registered office and number must appear on every email and website, Mr McCabe stated.

Firms also face "less obvious dangers" through the likes of copyright, data protection and privacy, he added.

Retail insurance customers might also like to know that firms which sell goods online need to comply with the E-commerce regulations Act 2002.
