The intellectual property of business insurance holders developing low-carbon products needs to be protected, it has been pointed out.

Speaking at the Confederation of British Industry's (CBI's) Climate Change Forum in London, deputy director general of the organisation John Cridland said that protection for intellectual property encourages business insurance holders to become more innovative.

"There are worrying signs that the government is preparing to blink on this issue to help the rapid diffusion of low-carbon technologies in developing countries," he explained.

Mr Cridland claimed that forcing business insurance holders to allow licensing of their green technologies could act as a deterrent to them developing new products.

In addition, the expert recommended that the government works on creating a commercial environment which offers the appropriate skills base, access to finance and protection for intellectual property to encourage research and development.

Recently, the CBI recommended that the research and development tax credit scheme is maintained and improved to support firms working on low-carbon technologies.
