Bedbugs are becoming an increasingly severe problem for hotel insurance owners, a new survey of complaints suggests.

Figures obtained by the Independent reveal that establishments in central London are the worst, but the problem is found across the UK.

While the majority of these were focused at budget accommodation, the issue also extended to a number of top-range hotel insurance owners.

According to the news provider, 32 out of the 46 complaints came from the borough of Westminster, while Glasgow had five and both Edinburgh and Bristol registered three.

Marko Vucinic, manager of Bristol's Rodney Hotel, describes the pests as "a nasty piece of work".

He states: "The worst thing for all the infestations is that it's not the mistake of the hotels. These bugs jump into suitcases and travel somewhere else."

Ruaridh Macdonald, business development director for Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, recently expressed optimism that conference and event budgets could increase in 2009, benefiting hotel insurance holders.ADNFCR-873-ID-19064982-ADNFCR
