Scottish business insurance customers could benefit in a number of ways if the country was independent from the rest of the UK, it has been claimed.

Finance secretary John Swinney told business insurance holders that independence could allow the nation to develop a more competitive tax regime, which would be less costly to run and more transparent.

"Independence would ensure that it was within the Scottish Government's powers both to cut taxes like corporation tax and to introduce a more efficient, transparent system," he said.

Furthermore, the minister suggested that full financial powers would permit the Scottish government to invest in more long-term infrastructure projects by borrowing the necessary funding.

Mr Swinney also said that the recent Taking Forward our National Conversation report showed that business insurance holders could benefit from greater long-term economic growth if the country was granted independence.

Earlier this week, research by the Confederation of British Industry claimed that the recession will prompt firms to change the way they operate, such as avoiding debt-driven growth and introducing more ethical responsibilities into their business models.
