A pub and nightclub operator in Hampshire is to introduce polycarbonate glasses in all of his venues.

Philip Cox, who runs a pub and club in Gosport as well as three pubs in Fareham, Hampshire, says that the change will be a big outlay but will pay for itself in broken glasses.

The Morning Advertiser reports that Nelson's in Gosport and its neighbouring club Emma's will be the first venues to switch with two pubs in Fareham to follow.

The operator's third pub, the Golden Lion, will only see a partial change due to its status as a food-led venue.

Mr Cox told the newspaper that the change would address "safety concerns" and was not a direct response to recent police pressure urging licensees in the area to change to polycarbonates.

"The cost is worth it if it stops someone losing an eye," he said.

The newspaper reported last month that the UK's largest nightclub company, Luminar, expected to save around £200,000 per year in claims following the introduction of polycarbonate glasses in all of its estates.
