Business advisor at Smart Works, Sarah Van Erp, said that environmental performance could be improved for a low initial outlay that would save a company money in the longer term.
She gave practical examples of swapping to energy-efficient light bulbs, educating staff and turning electronic equipment off at night.
An eco-policy would also appeal to potential customers and investors, she added.
Over the last 13 years the number of businesses that acknowledged the link between environmental performance and profitability has increased from 20 per cent to 50 per cent, according to Envirowise figures.
"They often think they have not got the financial resources to take action but more than often they will save money so there are real benefits for them of turning it round," Ms Van Erp said.
Envirowise, which is government-funded, gives free environmental advice to businesses.
