Prospective graduates view their employment options after university
in a variety of different ways, which presents a range of challenges
for careers advisors, it has been suggested.

Elspeth Farrar, communications director for the Association of
Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), has explained that while
some people enter higher education with a clear career plan, others
find that their employment aims change during their time at
university.

In addition, some people enter and leave university without any idea
as to what kind of employment they would prefer, who according to Ms
Farrar can often be the most challenging and interesting people that
career's advisors deal with.

She said: "The kind of people that come to university career advice
services can come from any of those three camps, probably in equal
proportions.

"The general principle around careers guidance is to explore what
their ideas are, what they're interested in, what motivates them, what
their objectives might be, what their skills are."

Figures compiled by the Higher Education Statistics Agency and
published recently by the Times show that medical graduates earn the
most money on average university, while humanities students tend to
earn considerably less on an annual basis.
