Pub insurance customers could be interested to learn that the government has announced new powers to help curb alcohol-related crime, it has been reported.

Home office minister Alan Campbell has revealed that from next summer drinking banning orders will target those that commit crime under the influence, according to the Morning Advertiser.

Anybody who has been involved in criminal or disorderly behaviour while under the influence of alcohol will be prevented from entering licensed premises under the new rule.

Mr Campbell said the government had recently provided local forces in Engladn and Wles with £4.5 million to deal with the problem.

"The Government has given police and local authorities a wide range of tools and powers to tackle alcohol fuelled crime," he added.

Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, national alcohol misuse charity, said: "If used as part of a package of measures to reduce alcohol harms these initiatives can make a real difference to safety on our streets."

According to the Home Office, of the one million violent attacks that occurred in 2007-08, nearly halve of offenders were drunk.
