Government proposals could mean that pub insurance holders will need to offer customers the choice of buying wine in smaller glasses.

These establishments could be forced to offer measures of 150ml in addition to the standard sizes of 175ml and 250ml.

Don Shenker, chief executive at Alcohol Concern, responded to the proposals by emphasising the fact that there is no need to ban pub insurance owners from offering larger measures.

He says that these establishments can even continue using their current glasses and simply pour less.

"Offering customers greater choice over how much they drink allows them to have more control and choose to drink more responsibly," Mr Shenker asserts.

He also highlights the importance of educating the public into realising that one large glass of wine is the recommended daily limit for women.

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon told the Telegraph that there is no demand for smaller measures.

He states that the chain's customers have made it clear they want to choose between 175ml and 250ml glasses.ADNFCR-873-ID-19096334-ADNFCR
