If the government fails to take the lead in carbon cutting in the office it will give all firms an excuse to pot out, it has been claimed.

Small business insurance customers with an environmental-friendly conscience could be interested to hear that Morgan Lovell maintained that the authorities must show businesses the way.

Lara Conaway, the firm's sustainability manager, said that the government was falling behind on emissions targets.

"In general, businesses are only really aware of a few key facts - energy reduction and hence cost reduction is the main one. It's harder to make them aware of cutting carbon in deliveries to and from the office for example," she added.

A new report by the Sustainable Development Committee has shown that many government offices are not on track to meet reductions in their carbon dioxide emissions for 2010-11

It reported that emissions from offices are down 6.3 per cent since the baseline year, which represents an improvement of 2.3 per cent from last year, but is still not on track to meet the 2010-11 target of a 12.5 per cent reduction.
