A supplier of warships and a curry house are among ten firms that have been praised by the government for innovative training programmes.

The companies' attitudes to "workplace dialogue" on the subject have been highlighted as good practice by the Department for Business, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the Trades Union Congress and the Department for Innovation, University and Skills.

Employment relations minister Pat McFadden, said: "These businesses have been successful in genuinely inspiring workers to take up training opportunities and boost their skills.

"Effective training programs are the way forward to help boost British productivity, improve workforce skills and enhance our competitive position on the world stage."

John Cridland, the CBI’s director-general, added that talking to staff about training is vital to firms of all sizes.

Yesterday, a report by education charity Edge found that 85 per cent of business leaders would encourage young people to take a vocational qualification (VQ).

It also revealed 61 per cent of respondents believe having a VQ was the starting point for their current success.
