The government is once again facing calls to scrap the increase in fuel duty planned for October.

According to Sally Low, director of policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, the price of oil is already so high that hauliers are struggling to cope and any further increase in the cost of petrol will hit all firms that use vehicles.

She said: "Another unnecessary fuel duty rise will simply add to the misery of vehicle dependant businesses, which are already fighting an upward battle to avoid passing extra costs onto customers."

Malcolm Wicks, the energy minister has already admitted that the increase cost of oil is "hitting businesses" and he must now call on the chancellor to scrap the two pence fuel duty rise, she added.

Last week the BBC reported that a committee of MPs is set to examine ways in which UK firms can reduce their carbon emissions.
