The government is failing to meet its own commitments relating to better regulation of small firms, one industry body has claimed.

According to John Wright, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, the government has not stuck to promises over common commencement dates and reducing the burden of red tape.

He said: "By ignoring its own common commencement dates the government is effectively sneaking regulation in through the backdoor in the hope that no one will notice.

"At a time of growing economic doubt and rising youth unemployment the government is stunting the growth of the same small businesses that are expected to deliver innovation, growth and jobs."

He added that 82 new pieces of business legislation came in to effect on April 6th 2008 and that more have been introduced outside common commencement dates.

Last week, Andrew Jupp of accountancy firm Tenon urged the government to simplify the tax system for small firms.
