The government is putting the future of small firms at risk, one industry body believes.
In a letter to John Hutton - the minister responsible for business enterprise and regulatory reform - the Association of Charter Certified Accountant (ACCA) expresses its fears that government policy focuses too much on big companies, the Daily Telegraph reports.
This could lead to "the real creators of employment, wealth and economic growth in the UK - small businesses" being ignored by those in power, the letter said.
Speaking to the Telegraph, Professor Robin Jarvis, head of ACCA's small business affairs, said that the government should remember that for every job created by a medium-sized firm in the last five years, 37 were created by the small business sector.
At the start of the month the Forum of Private Business expressed similar concerns, saying it was worried the small-business agenda could be pushed the margins of government thinking.
