SMEs should consider allowing staff members to work flexibly to ease the financial burden on them, it has been claimed.

According to workplace information and consultancy services firm Croner, the increased cost of fuel means that many workers will be looking to cut their travel costs.

Joanne Pitts, employment law consultant at the firm, said: "We expect an increasing number of employees to be approaching their bosses with requests to consider changing their terms and conditions in order to reduce their weekly spend."

Some part-time workers might even decide that the cost of getting to work means that it is not worth their while having the job at all, she added.

Firms should consider allowing people to work from home or to change their start times so they can avoid rush hour traffic, Ms Pitts stated.

Meanwhile, a survey by City and Guilds suggests that allowing staff to work flexibly could make them happier and more productive.
