The government should not ignore the recommendations of the Glover Report, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

It might interest business insurance customers to know that the body has given a cautious welcome to the document which calls for a fairer deal for small suppliers bidding for public sector contracts.

The document calls on the government to improve access to government contracts through simplification of the tendering process and better communication.

Clive Davenport, FSB trade and industry chairman, said: "Small businesses offer great value to our communities, especially in these difficult economic times, and by using small businesses, money is kept within the local economy."

However, the report could have gone further and its recommendations will be no use at all if they are not embraced by the government, he added.

Earlier this week, the chancellor Alistair Darling announced that a £1 billion emergency fund has been set up to allow small firms to access emergency funding.

In his pre-budget report, he explained that otherwise viable businesses will be able to borrow between £1,000 and £1 million.ADNFCR-873-ID-18900100-ADNFCR
