The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has called on the government to help business insurance customers by capping interest rate charges on credit cards.
In his new year message, national chairman John Wright urged MPs to support business insurance customers by making sure the banks allow firms access to credit to help with cash flow problems.
He added that bank managers who have not experienced previous recessions should have training so that they can aid struggling business insurance customers.
The government must not raise taxes in March or bring in new regulations that would create an added burden for small firms, instead concentrating on shoring up the economy, he said.
Mr Wright concluded that small businesses "will play a pivotal role in driving the UK economy out of recession".
Earlier this month, the FSB warned that government red tape is dissuading small businesses from taking on new staff, as many bosses do not feel confident about employment law.
