Business insurance customers may be comforted to learn that UK shoppers are expected to spend more this Christmas than last despite the credit crunch, according to analysts at Verdict Research.
Consumers will fork out £83.3 billion at shops in the final quarter of 2008, which works out at £1,363 per head, forecasters predict.
This constitutes a rise of two per cent compared to last year, but is the second lowest growth rate in 20 years.
Meanwhile the amount spent on buying food at Christmas presents is estimated to increase to £4.7 billion, up ten per cent from 2007, the Deloitte Christmas Survey reports.
