The police need to demonstrate their commitment to fighting crimes against business insurance holders, it has been claimed.

A best practice checklist has been launched by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to allow police officers to show how they are helping their local business community.

The move comes as the FSB claimed crimes against business insurance customers have increased during the recession.

Figures published by the group state that 64 per cent of business insurance holders say they have been the victim of crime in the past year, showing a seven per cent rise on 2006.

Mike Cherry, home affairs chairman at the FSB, commented: "All the reports show that crimes against business are rising during the recession and businesses risk becoming victims due to an increase in threatening behaviour, burglary, arson and assaults on their staff."

Earlier this year, the organisation clamed that fraud and online crime costs each small business insurance holder an average of £768 per year.
