SMEs could be missing out on hidden skills possessed by their staff, a new survey shows.

Research by Learndirect Business found that 60 per cent of workers think they have an ability that they believe their employer would be able to make use of but does not.

However, 82 per cent claimed their employers never even ask about these additional skills, which range from sales experience to IT abilities.

It also found that many people are keen to put their hidden aptitudes into practice, with 45 per cent saying it would make them more motivated at work, while 32 per cent feel it would make them more empowered.

Kirstie Donnelly, director of products and marketing at Learndirect Business, said: "Effective training is the key to unlocking hidden skills and ensuring employees meet day-to-day business objectives.

"By harnessing the hidden skills of employees, bosses can transform not only their business but also maximise their employees' full potential."

Last week, the government announced that work-based learning providers and colleges will have to publish their assessment rating from 2010, allowing employers and students to compare results.
