Businesses are increasingly relaxing dress codes as they look to present a modern image, a new survey has found.

Research by development consultancy Aziz reveals that more than half of managers allow their staff to work in smart-casual clothes when carrying out day-to-day duties.

It also found that less than a quarter of employers require their staff to wear a suit at all times.

Professor Khalid Aziz, chairman of the firm, said: "Enforcing a suits-only dress code is seen as outdated and perhaps a little insular in an increasingly international workplace, an image that savvy modern companies want to steer clear of."

However, bosses still favour suits for important meeting and other occasions when a formal appearance is required, he added.

Recently, the British Psychological Society claimed that managers of British firms are increasingly using psychometric testing in order to help identify suitable candidates for vacant positions at their companies.
