Businesses are setting a "sensible example" by refusing to panic buy ahead of a planned fuel strike, a new survey shows.

The study, conducted by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) reveals that 77 per cent of companies said no when asked if they were planning to stockpile petrol or diesel.

David Frost, director-general of the BCCC, said: "Hopefully these findings will help quash any fear of panic buying at the pumps ahead of any industrial action by tanker drivers.

"Businesses are of course concerned about the impact of planned strike action, but they are setting a sensible example here."

He added that the government must act and scrap the planned two pence fuel duty rise planned for October.

This would show that politicians understand the problems that the high price of oil is causing the economy, Mr Frost stated.

Earlier this week Mr Frost expressed his dismay at the government's handling of industrial disputes, pointing out that such action can have a massive impact on business.
