Female entrepreneurs 'likely to be older'

Female entrepreneurs are more likely to venture into a new business later in life, according to one expert.

The British Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAWE) said today that in general women would be more likely to set up a small business once they feel secure both financially and with family to support them.

Tanya Hine, president of the BAWE, said the lessening of financial burdens such as mortgage repayments and children were more likely to be consideration for women and that this meant women entrepreneurs would be more likely to start up later in life.

"It's the confidence of security of being able to go to the bank and say: 'Alright, I would like £25,000 please. My house is worth half a million' and that's what it's all about," she said.

Earlier this year a four-year study by New-York based consultancy Catalyst revealed that companies who had a larger proportion of females in board positions could deliver equity returns 53 per cent higher than those who had the lowest number of women.
