SMEs should have an "energy audit" to find out where they can cut costs, one expert says.

Michael Webb, spokesperson for the Green Consultancy, said: "We'd always advise that people have an energy audit done which will identify ways in which they can save energy."

But he added that simple things, like turning off lights when the office was not in use, were a good way to start saving money.

And he said whether or not SMEs made themselves energy efficient usually depended on not only the amount of money they would save in the long run, but also how long these savings would take to come through.

If it takes more than two-years to recoup the initial outlay through future savings then "companies will probably be deterred from doing it", he said.

Research by the Federation of Small Businesses has found that 83 per cent of firms say they are actively engaged in activities such as recycling and waste minimisation.
