Employers should make sure they are using the skills that can be provided by former soldiers, one expert has stated.
Writing for the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, Nicholas Craig, a partner at Watson Burton law firm, explained that people learn a variety of skills in the armed forces, but many companies are failing to make use of them.
He said: "The skills they learn during a lifetime with the Army, Royal Navy or Royal Air Force translate well to civilian jobs.
"They are used to planning, organising, being team players and leading projects and have a positive work ethic."
Because of this, small businesses should take it upon themselves to make sure these abilities are put to good use, he added.
Greater support from the armed services should also be provided, Mr Craig remarked.
Yesterday, Professor Phil Whyman, senior academic at the University of Central Lancashire, backed a Forum of Private Business campaign aimed at getting government to provide a boost to small firms.
