An eighth of UK pubs could shut down by 2012, one body has warned.
It might interest pub insurance customers to know that the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) has written to the chancellor of the exchequer to urge him to give publicans a hand.
The body has called on Alistair Darling to ditch the planned duty increase for beer which would see the tax rise at two per cent above the rate of inflation for the next four years.
It also called on Mr Darling to consider a reduced level of tax for beer sold in pubs.
According to Camra, pubs are closing because of pressure from the smoking ban, economic downturn, cheap supermarket booze and increased duty.
It might also interest pub insurance customers to know that Camra is to sponsor the Great British Beer Experience at the BBC Good Food Show.
The event takes place in Birmingham between November 26th and 30th.
