Around one in ten owners of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) believe that education is essential for success, suggesting that many more may believe quite the opposite.

The study conducted by Barclays Local Business (BLB) claims that only 46 per cent of bosses of SME's have a degree and 26 per cent are educated to GCSE level or below.

John Davis, marketing director for BLB said: "This survey really does suggest that entrepreneurialism is a quality born to people, rather than taught."

It was also suggested that according to recent figures new business start-ups were at an all-time high, with over 100,000 new businesses being formed every quarter.

A study last week by NatWest found that nearly 17 million people in the UK harbour a business idea, with 30 per cent planning to turn it into a reality.

The report suggests that the increasing popularity of 'start up' reality shows could be influencing people to consider setting up on their own.
